Jo-Ann Anstett Wins JetBlue tickets!
JetBlue Airways not only runs a great airline but, is a very civic minded organization as well. Last year they developed a program to encourage their employees to volunteer and get involved in their communities. In return, after so many accumulated hours of volunteer work JetBlue would reward the employee with ticket vouchers to the organization of their choice. The Ft Lauderdale Woman's Club is fortunate that two of our members - Linda Parlock and Donna Richardson - are JetBlue Flight Attendants. Because of their volunteer hours for FLWC, they earned 2 JetBlue tickets and named FLWC as the recipient organization.
So for our January meeting, a raffle was held to benefit both the FLWC and The South Florida Wildlife Center with our first pair of tickets.
Pictured above with Donna Richardson (right) is the winner Jo-Ann Anstett, (center) a co-worker of FLWC member DonnaLee Minott (left) who sold the winning ticket!

Lea M. Astin is 50/50 Winner!
As Raffle Chairman Susie Flynn and President JoAnn Smith looked on, 5-year-old Rebecca drew ticket # 15 which belonged to Susie's friend Lea M. Astin. Lea had purchased 2 tickets from Susie who sold a grand total of 20. What a great Christmas surprise for Lea - right? But that's not the best part of this story. In the spirit of the season, Lea gave the entire $5000 prize to a family who was not going to have much of a Christmas! Following suit, Susie did the same thing with her $100 award for selling the winning ticket!

Mae Silver Wins Blimp Ride - Gives It Away!
Education Chairman Mae Silver was the originator of the idea to raffle a ride on the Goodyear Blimp to earn money for the FLWC Scholarship. Since she had previously won a blimp ride, she bought just 3 tickets for the raffle to support the project. She had even given an enthusiastic account of her own ride in the absence of Goodyear pilot Mandy Martin who was unable to attend the November 18 meeting. Imagine her surprise when her ticket was drawn! "I was simply flabbergasted!" she said. She was ready to have them draw another winning ticket, but President JoAnn Smith had a better idea. Shauna Jacobs from Melbourne had learned about the raffle through Goodyear and the website and wanted to win a blimp ride as a 90th birthday gift for her father, a former airline pilot. She called JoAnn and said, "I'll take all the tickets you have left!" So, she bought 24 tickets, making the scholarship fundraiser a huge success! It seemed entirely appropriate that she should be Mae's choice to win the ride!
Lifetime Member Lorraine Vreeland Dies
Longtime member Lorraine Vreeland died on Friday, November 4, ending a line of Vreeland members dating back to 1911.
She was the third Vreeland to be a member of FLWC, following her mother-in-law Dorothy (Mrs. JB, Jr.) and Dorothy's mother-in-law Cordelia (Mrs. J. B. Sr.) who is one of 34 members listed in the 1911 - 1912 Yearbook. Since she was one of 3 "leaders" of the February 23, 2012 program in that yearbook, she may well have been one of the original 18 members. She was president for 1928 - 1929. Many of our nearly-complete collection of yearbooks belonged to her.
According to the yearbooks, from 1949-1958 both Cordelia & Dorothy were members. Cordelia died in 1958; Dorothy, in 1977. Both were lifetime members for many years.
Lorraine joined FLWC the year after her mother-in-law Dorothy (Mrs. JB, Jr.) died and had been a member since 1978. She was named a Lifetime Member in 2007. Although she hadn't been active in recent years, it wasn't due to failing health; she was busy taking care of her grandchildren! According to her daughter Jane Vreeland, her death resulted from a massive stroke as she was on her way home from church on Sunday, October 30.

Club Celebrates 100th Birthday
The Fort Lauderdale Woman's Club marked its 100th birthday on January 11, 2011 (1/11/11). Several events were held to celebrate this momentous milestone. First, a proclamation by Mayor Jack Seiler declared that January 11 would be Fort Lauderdale Woman's Club Day.
On Friday, January 14, 2011, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held on the steps of the Clubhouse with Mayor Jack Seiler, Vice-Mayor Romney Rogers, Commissioner Bobby DuBose and members of the FLWC in attendance. The ribbon cutting marked the completion of phase 1 of the renovation of the clubhouse, a project that had its inception 10 years ago.
Architect Susan McClellan (also a club member), Louis Friend of Friendly Construction and Building Chair Genia Duncan Ellis proudly presented the building to the membership and the public for a viewing at this ribbon cutting. It also placed the front of the club back on Andrews Avenue returning the building location to its original orientation and the street address to 20 South Andrews Avenue.
On Friday, January 21, at the regular monthly meeting, over 100 members and guests enjoyed a proper birthday party in the renovated Clubhouse. County Historian and longtime member Helen Landers was the featured speaker and entertainment was provided by the Broward Women's Chorus. Honored guests included representatives from the Seminole Tribe, the Girl Scouts, the Port Commission, the Broward County Library, the Red Cross, the Department of Children and Families, the Old Dillard School and the YMCA, all of whom FLWC had assisted at some point in their history.

October Meeting Features Linda Boyd
GFWC Florida Past-President Linda Boyd was the speaker at the October meeting of FLWC. Many current members of the Club had never had an orientation or an initiation ceremony to officially welcome them into membership. The purpose of this meeting was to do both.
Linda used a Power-Point presentation which traced GFWC clubs back to founder Jennie June Croley who founded Sorosis in 1869; this utimately led to the formation of GFWC in 1890. She also included the history of the Florida Federation and of FLWC. A candlelight commitment ceremony followed her presentation and members pledged their intent to be a part of the work of the Club.
District Director Darlene Vlazny shared information about upcoming District 13 events. Linda and Darlene were given certificates of appreciation as well as copies of Mae Silver and Susan McClellan’s book Watch Out, Ivy.

Groundbreaking for Next Phase of Clubhouse Renovations Held
On Friday, September 3, 2010 the long-awaited groundbreaking for the FLWC Clubhouse renovation took place. Along with contractor Louis Friendly, architect Susan McClellan and FLWC President JoAnn Smith, Ft. Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler and Commissioner Romney Rodgers wielded the city's special ceremonial gold shovels to officially initiate the project which has been in the planning stages for many years. It is hoped that it will be completed by the Club's 100th birthday on January 11, 2011.

Florida Gubernatorial Candidate Alex Sink Rents Clubhouse For Rally
“Women for Alex,” an event that may be more meaningful after the outcome of the November elections, was held on August 18 at the FLWC Clubhouse.
Democratic candidate for governor Alex Sink rented the FLWC Clubhouse for a rally prior to the August primary elections. She was joined by US Representative Debbie Wasserman Shultz, State Senator Nan Rich and Broward County Commissioner Kristen Jacobs as well as approximately 100 supporters in a Democratic love fest for the gubernatorial hopeful.
Club Architect Susan McClellan used the opportunity to share her renderings of the renovated Clubhouse with the women, hoping they will remember FLWC when the vote for grants comes up again.
Membership Chairman Jeannie Burke almost brought the rally to a halt when she crashed to the floor while trying to get a good photo of the candidate.
Other FLWC members attending the event were Sue Long, Caroline Seabright, Mae Silver, Jean Deering, Kathy Schauer, Gretchen Thompson and Bev Hoppe.

District 13 Spring Workshop, May 22, 2010
Click on the photo at left to view the photos in Picasa!
Alice Sakhnovsky and Bev Hoppe attended the District 13 Workshop on Saturday, May 22 at Volunteer Park in Plantation. Caroline Seabright was on her way but had a close encounter with her garage door and didn't make it. Donna Richardson was hoping to come, but ended up having a flight. Too bad they - and the rest of you - missed it. Both Alice and Bev agreed - it was a hoot!
The new GFWC Florida President Teddy Hulse who was the visiting officer is a lot of fun - her talk was informative but humorous! Her President's Project is "Change or Die!"
It has to do with the fact that the state lost a total of 927 members last year and emphasized that we must devise ways to not only increase our membership, but even more importantly, be able to retain the members we have. She announced several new ideas which are being incorporated as state policy. One way the state will save $10,000 is that The Florida Clubwoman - the state newsletter which you all should have been receiving 3 times a year - will be sent out by e-mail only and will be reformatted into 8 x 11 for printing. Because almost all communication will be done by e-mail, she suggested having e-mail buddies for members without e-mail.
District 13 Director Darlene Vlazny is going to be a terrific District Director.
She already has the calendar laid out for the next 2 years - guess who's hosting the District Art Show next February!! FLWC!
AND - in 2013, the GFWC Convention is to be held either here or in WPB - but not Miami.
Best of all - there was a wonderful brunch done by the Plantation Acres WC! There were 2 kinds of eggs, sausage, bacon, 2 kinds of French toast, 2 kinds of muffins, fruit and small Danish pastries. We even had mimosas with strawberries! All for $4.00! Yum!
There were 8 raffle baskets - one from each club represented - ours was a spa basket.
We learned that our own Genia Ellis is the new District Secretary.
Alice filled in for JoAnn Smith to do the president's report.
And that's the way it was on Saturday, May 22, 2010! The next district meeting will be in October hosted by the Parkland WC.
